Dairy farmer develops Splash It dribble bar attachment

May 31, 2023May 31, 2023

Dairy farmer Stephen McKeown, from Newtownabbey, County Antrim, has designed a plastic boot that can be bolted to the end of a dribble bar hose to improve distribution.

Previously, he had noticed slurry caking in bands after application, with the material remaining in the sward before being picked up by the rake, baler or forager.

This was causing subsequent issues with silage fermentation and cow health.

His solution, dubbed the Splash It, effectively works as a mini splash plate at the end of each pipe, with the convex dome encouraging a more uniform spread of material.

However, he says the system still operates at the same pressure and, crucially, without significantly increasing the amount of ammonia released.

Fitting is a relatively simple process that involves lopping off about 35mm from the end of each pipe, before drilling two 6mm holes through which the stainless-steel mounting bolts slot.

A 40-row dribble-bar takes roughly an hour to convert.

Each unit costs £10 and they are available from various dealers across Britain and Northern Ireland.

To find a nearby distributor, interested parties are best placed calling Stephen on 07708 393990.
